In this blog post, I am going to show step by step instructions of how to load these free maps onto a Garmin GPS device using a Mac computer. Abbreviated as OSM, it powers thousands of web sites, mobile apps (like Maps.Me) and hardware devices under the the open license. ![]() OpenStreetMaps is a crowdsourced, free to use, map of the world. Instead of buying the official maps from Garmin which costs a lot of money, I found I could load OpenStreetMaps into our Garmin GPS, and still have all the same functionalities as the official Garmin proprietary maps. This is where OpenStreetMaps came into the picture. But, once we crossed into Belize our digital avatar was lost in virtual space and needed new maps. Our Garmin Nuvi 2595 came with the maps of North American preloaded. We do download maps in advance for Maps.Me, Forevermaps, etc., but having a dedicated Garmin GPS unit that is just a quick glance away has been very valuable. However it is useless when there is no cell coverage or we are out of data on our prepaid plans. It works great if we have a local sim card and are able to connect to Google’s server. We actually find that we use Google Maps a lot. I looked at what we would need in terms of paper maps, mapping programs, GPS, etc. We know this works for the devices mentioned below.Before starting off on our road trip from Canada to Argentina, I knew that given my propensity to get lost upon walking out my front door, that having accurate navigation would be critical. There are ways to change this, but this is pretty advanced stuff. You will notice that the name on your device is different than the name you gave the file, that’s normal. Did this work for you? Just change the name of your file to something more memorable like for example “map-sweden” before copy-pasting it into the Garmin folder. Uploading multiple maps on your device was not possible with older Garmin devices. What if I want multiple maps on my device?Īs you will have noticed, the file we have been working with is called gmapsupp.img. In there you will find a folder Garmin, open that and copy-paste your file in there. ![]() Take the one that is not called Garmin, it will be somthing like USB-station (F:). Only when connecting your device to your computer, you will see two different drives pop up. If you bought a memory card for your device, you can upload your maps on there. Things may look a bit different if you have WinZip installed. To unzip the file you just downloaded, right-click on it and choose Extract Here. Next look at your prefered language and download the Install image for micro SD card file.If your country is not in the dropdown, choose More Countries.
